It is exceptional! Maggie Nelson is an author with a collection of published work including poetry, essays, and autobiography. She also grew up the niece of Jane Mixer, whose 1969 murder had remained unsolved until 2004. This book is about Nelson’s life, her family’s, and the trial of Jane Mixer’s murderer. It is also a meditation on humanity and societyâ€"and so many thingsâ€"that I found myself inhaling the audiobook but also needing to sit with sentences and thoughts. â€"Jamie Canaves A River of Stars by Vanessa Hua Vanessa Hua is a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, and the rich details in this novel show how well she knows San Francisco’s Chinatown. Scarlett Chen is a double immigrant: from her rural hometown in China to a city where she climbs up the factory ranks; and from that city to a maternity hotel in the US, where she and other pregnant women plan to give birth so that their children will have American citizenship. Things don’t go according to plan, though. The plot points aren’t always plausible, but the emotional beats ring true, as Scarlett forges an unconventional family, and as we come to understand the difficult circumstances of an abortionist, the proprietor of the maternity hotel, and many other vivid characters. â€"Christine Ro Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells I can’t even explain how much I love these books. Murderbot is just a sarcastic, anti-social,  binge-watching treasure! Rogue Protocol is the third installment in the Murderbot Diaries novella series from Martha Wells and it’s definitely my favorite so far. In this adventure, Murderbot meets up with another bot, Miki, that is the robot equivalent of a cinnamon roll that is too pure for this world, and together they try to save his crew. As usual, Murderbot is only low-key into saving the day, taking a few minutes out in the middle of the chaos to re-watch some of its favorite show, Sanctuary Moon. A bot after my own heart! There’s one more novella in the series coming out in October and a novel length adventure expected in early 2020. â€"Dana Lee Severance by Ling Ma Holy cats, I loved this book so much! It is a razor-sharp satire, a deadpan send-up of dystopias, of millenials, of cults, of SO MANY THINGS. Here’s what you need to know: A plague has turned most of the country into zombies (minus the brain eating), who sort of skip like a record in place in their pre-plague routines until they die. Candace is the orphaned daughter of Chinese immigrants who works in the bible department of a publisher. She is not interested in, well, anything, really. Her apathy is such that she doesn’t even notice this plague is going on until most of NYC is infected. Candace is somehow immune, and manages to team up with a group of survivors led by a cheesy holy roller. The group is collecting supplies to start society over again in a place called The Facility, but Candace has a secret that might change everything. This novel is smart, biting, and wholly original. It gave me You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine vibes. Did I mention I loved it? â€"Liberty Hardy Spectacle, Vol 1 by Megan Rose Gedris I’ve been following Gedris’s comics since her Yu+Me: Dream webcomic days a decade ago. Since then, her comics have only gotten better, while keeping the weirdness and queerness that appealed to me in high school. Spectacle is about Anna, who works in the circus with her twin, Kat. Anna is a psychic in the circus, but she doesn’t believe in anything supernatural. Until Kat is murdered, and her ghost sticks around to help her solve the mystery. Meanwhile, why does the bearded lady get so blush-y when she sees Anna/Kat, and why does Kat not want to talk about it? I mean, how could you go wrong with a comic about a travelling circus and a murder mystery? Add to that Gedris’s distinctive style, and I was sold. â€"Danika Ellis Stamped: An Anti-Travel Novel  by Kawika Guillermo Full disclosure: I received this book so I could review it (for another publication) along with a non-fiction travel book, which I did. As a Mvskoke (Creek) reader who is a fan of travel literature, I am wary of the problems that can befall this genre I love, like sentimentality, cultural appropriation, and oversimplification of entire nations. I was attracted to this book because its subtitle suggests it attempts to escape those problems, and it does. Stamped is a multi-voiced novel following the non-sentimental, non-madcap adventures of a group of ethnically diverse ex-pats traveling around Asia. The main voice is that of Skylar/Kawika, a genderfluid Filipino-American travel blogger. For the sake of this intriguing (if sometimes frustrating) character, I started wishing the novel could turn into one of those tidy, predictable ones in which the group of friends pulls together over a shared foreign experience or learns that people are really mostly alike. But this is an anti-travel n ovel, so it’s not that easy. But I wasn’t left depressed or bitter at the end either. This Magic Mike fanfic, as it was initially pitched as, is all around wonderful, with relatable characters and fun-as-hell chapter headings. It’s a genius romance story that will live through the ages. â€"Silvana Reyes Lopez Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman There’s no lack of YA books about grief and loss, but I’ve rarely seen it done so well. In Summer Bird Blue seventeen-year-old Rumi loses her sister in a car crash and is sent to live with her aunt in Hawaii when her mother is unable to cope with the loss. Feeling isolated and disconnected from the music she and her sister loved, Rumi pushes everyone away. But her aunt refuses to leave. And her two new neighborsâ€"la blunt surfer and a grumpy old recluseâ€"seem surprisingly immune to her temper, too. Causes such as drug abuse are mostly associated with African Americans since most of them are considered to be poor and hence more prone to drug abuse (Merrill, 2012). The cases of low birth weight continue to reduce but at a faster rate among the whites compared to black women (Kleinman, 1997). According to the many researches done, scientists have concluded that race has a lot of contribution to the genetic makeup that affects birth weight. The puzzle for the cause of these disparities in birth weight as remained unsolved leading scientists to assume that black women differ genetically from w hite women in their ability to bear normal or large infants (Hulsey, 1991) which for example refers to â€Å"genetic factors affecting growth, such as neonatal sex and race† Studies have been conducted on white women and African American mothers. It shows that most African Americans mothers trace their origin in West Africa where there was slave trade while the U.S blacks derive about three quarters of their genetic heritage from West African ancestors and the rest from Europeans. It also showed that women born by of â€Å"pure† West African origin give birth to smaller infants compared to African Americans due to the European genetic mixture in them (Chakraborty, 1991). Another research was done on Non-Hispanic black infants, non-Hispanic white infants and Hispanic infants by the March of Dimes organization in 2013. It showed that the total preterm birthrate was 11.4%. However, 16.3% of non-Hispanic black infants were born preterm, compared to10.2%of non-Hispanic white infants and 11.3% of Hispanic infants (Martin, 2015). These results showed that the rate of preterm births among black infants was 60% higher than the rate for non-Hispanic white i nfants and 44% higher than the rate for Hispanic infants. One of the causes found was that African American women are more prone to chronic stress compared to white women. This is due to one factor such as interpersonal racial discrimination (Stansil, 2000). Wadhwa showed that chronic maternal exposure to stress—through maternal cardiovascular, immune, and neuroendocrine processes—is detrimental to infants’ birth-weight. In addition, psycho physiological stress causes an increase in production of corticotrophin-releasing hormone which leads to preterm delivery (Nancy, 2016). When research was conducted, a higher number of low birth weights were observed in African Americans women who experienced racial discrimination than those who did not (Collins, 2000) In addition, African-Americans tend to experience higher rates of poverty than whites, and have less access to health care. They also are more likely to suffer health problems like obesity and diabetes, and more likely to use drugs while pregnant. This has been a cause but also well-off African Americans experience these low birth weights and it was associated with the stress of having to be the model or only minorities or stress associated with them having to work extra hard to prove to the world that they are able according to Arlene, a professor at the Michigan school of public health. In order to reduce these disparities in the increased number of low birth weight among African Americans, the government in the United States has. How human bodies are different from one another This is also referred to as human variation and it ranges from physical characteristics to their genetic makeup. Variation occurs in every species of living being and it is what enables them to survive in different ecological conditions. These variations may be genetically inherited, or adapted from the environment and life choices. Many genetic differences have little effect on the reproduction or lifestyle of living beings but help differentiate one species form another. However, we all belong to the same, single, biological community, the human species. There are environmental factors that bring about variations in human bodies such as climate and disease and nutrition. In regards to climatic factors, people who live in areas that have more exposure to sunlight have a darker skin tone that enables the body to produce more melanin to ensure growth. On the other hand people who live further from the sun in equatorial regions have a light skin tone because they need to absorb more sunlight in order to produce vitamin D for survival. Diseases also make human bodies vary. For example rickets makes people develop bow legs which vary from the other people. Nutrition also affects human bodies although the kind of nutrition one takes is their choice hence this factor is controllable. Feeding in foods that contain Besphenol(BPA) which appears in foods that are plastically canned and once the plastic is exposed to heat it melts and when people consume it over a long period of time, may experience physiological obesity which makes their body ap pearance different from others in terms of size (Bertoli, 2015) Genetic variations range from genetic sources and mutations, sexual reproduction and epigenetics. For example, eye colour is a genetically determined trait in that some people have brown eyes others blue. Other characteristics that are genetically inherited include, earlobe attachment, hair colour, and hair growth patterns Human body variations are measured in anthropometry which is defined as the study of the measurements of different parts of the human body. The most commonly used measurements include, weight, height, organ size (brain, penis, vagina), and waist-hip ratio. Some people are taller than others while others are slender or heavier. This body differences help designers build machines that suit them, seat belts and identification for forensics through use of fingerprints (Jain, 2000). Theories have come up to explain the differences in human bodies such as creation theory which states that human beings are created in the image and likeness of God which scientists criticized and came up with the evolution theory which talks about gradual development of man over the decades through gene mutations and adaptations. They developed different body structures as they were adapting to different climatic conditions. Facial difference is also noticeable in all human beings in that it is so difficult to find people who are exactly alike unless they are identical twins. These is a nature’s doing so that we are able to recognize each other. There are differences in the length or shape of the nose and location of the eyes. Michael from University of California says that facial characteristics are not similar to other body patterns in that a person with long legs must have long arms. Genome variations are differences in the sequence of DNA from one person to another. Just as people do not look the same their genetic makeup is also different. There are health disparities in terms of life expectancy, mortality rate and health status between people of different ethnicities and races. Physical variations in human beings are considered to be a product of nature and cultural background (Margaret, 2010). As scientists try to get a better understanding of how the genome and environmental interact as determinants of health, some aspects of human identity pose a challenge and an opportunity for clarification. Different populations can be considered to have a high risk or low risk of a certain disease depending on the ancestry, environmental factors and genetic factors (Brian, 2001). The way a disease progresses is also said to vary among different populations. A study done on HIV progression showed that it progressed faster in black people or Africans than white people (Hall, 2007). In addition, the socioeconomic condition of people in certain places also affects their body and health. For example where there is not much economic developments and hence people cannot easily access healthy food due to travelling distance, the occupants of such a region may consume a lot of fast foods, junk and unhealthy foods which may cause obesity. It also leads to cardiovascular diseases such as heart-attacks and diabetes (Suarez, 2015). For African Americans in the United States, racism is an organized social and cultural phenomenon that causes social and health disparities through exclusion, prejudice, and discrimination. It is manifested as both distal and proximal factors affecting their health (Paradies Y, 2015). The cultural beliefs of people also affect their health for example some Africans in sub-Saharan Africa believe that their health is dependent on fate they therefore don’t seek medication when sick. Others believe that health is an important aspect of one’s life and take care of their health. These beliefs are one factor that causes differences in the health of people (Lewis, 2000). Genetic factors also affect human bodies and health. A phenotype is the outward or physical appearance of a living being. In human beings, phenotypic characteristics are manifested in terms of skin colour, hair colour, eye colour and height. It affects he physical look and body of people. A genotype however is an internal characteristic that can be inherited. Some diseases are present in the genes of a person and these may be inherited by the offspring. Government policies have tried to tackle health inequalities such as awareness programs in for example areas where sickle cell anaemia or diabetes is prevalent, people are made aware of the early signs and symptoms of the disease so as to obtain early treatment (Jorde, 2004). Also ethnic based drugs have been invented which have a certain propensity to heal some illnesses in certain people. For example in the United States, a drug, BiDil, was formed to treat congestive heart failure among black Americans. They were observed to have very low response to the earlier drugs and hence a stronger one had to be invented (Exner, 2001). Conclusion Medical anthropology has put a lot of study in Cross-cultural health disparities, local biologies and human differences. This paper looks at the entity of Urrutia who remains indifferent of the plight of man as well as the destructive apathy of Chilean literature amidst corruption and literary collapse. Bolano uses this narrator to point out the air of complacency that pervades the artists, officials and other people who are accountable to history because of the show of indifference. Father Urrutia is not interested in politics at all since he is basically a priest and literary critic and a priest first and foremost but the political events at that present time seem to get a hold at the upper class circles of literati whom he associates with. His has a comical reaction to the election of Allende (and Pinochet’s subsequent coup) since as the people of Chile march to the streets in sweeping social change, Urrutia indulges himself in classical Greek literature so that he is able to escape the political confusion that may derail him from his own personal pursuits. Pinochet succeeds and restores some kind of order. Urrutia is able to breathe as he senses peace at hand. Thus the priest seemingly has distantiated himself from this kind of responsibility and escapes in his own world. He thinks that it distracts him from his art. He is of the thinking that he needs to find something if he does indulges in the confusion of politics if he is to pursue it at all. Thus, he is alienated from the times. Basic to being an effective person is the fact that we are able to make decisions and freely choose from among alternatives. One’s likes and dislikes are partly the wisdom of one’s organism, partly the result of helpful learning that protects one and keeps one out of trouble, and partly the result of harmful learning. Harmful learning includes certain kinds of accidental learning brought about by chance circumstances, as well as conditioned responses that were once appropriate but are no longer so. These obsolete ways of thinking and feeling make it hard for one to act in healthy and satisfying ways now. But when one pays attention to one’s liking and disliking, one naturally becomes more fully aware of likes and dislikes of what one wants to do and do not want to do. One discovers that these sometimes contradict with what one should like and dislike, if one is aware of what is happening inside him. As Urrutia refuses to recognize the kind of apathy that he has for being involved with the exigencies of the times then, he cannot identify with the people around him. The author states that Urrutia maintains that â€Å"One has a moral obligation to take responsibility for one’s actions, and that includes one’s words and silences, yes, one’s silences, because silences rise to heaven too, and God hears them, and only God understands and judges them, so one must be very careful with one’s silences. I am responsible in every way. My silences are immaculate. Let me make that clear. Clear to God above all. † (Bolano, 1) Thus, his silence can be a kind of cowardice and stubbornness that characterize his motives. Maria Canales’ house is the host of a soiree and a few of Chile’s well-bred and worldly poets gather to drink cocktails. There is a kind of denial about the urgency of the times as one guest accidentally discovers man manacled who has been tortured because he was an anti-Pinochet dissident. The guest discovers this was done by Canales’ husband, Jimmy Thompson. Urrutia thus looks deeply at the implications of this and how it reflects on the inappropriate choice of Canales as the party is done in the same house. â€Å"Because, normally, when she had a soiree, the basement was unoccupied. I asked myself the following question: Why then, on that particular night, did a guest who lost his way find that poor man? The answer was simple: Because with time, vigilance tends to relax, because all horrors are dulled by routine. I asked myself the following question: Why didn’t anyone say anything at the time? The answer was simple: Because they were afraid. I was not afraid. I would have been able to speak out but I didn’t see anything, I didn’t know until it was too late. Why go stirring up things that had settled down after a few years? † (Bolano, 122). Every guest in the party ignores and dismisses this as people get to know about the tortured man at the basement of the house where the party was being held. It is a pity that a priest like Urrutia could justify this inhumanity saying that this is some sort of a goal of literary history, â€Å"That is how literature is made, that is how the great works of Western literature are made. You better get used to it. † (Bolano, 128). Urrutia as an indifferent man is like that of the tortured man and the symbolism that this entails is replete all throughout the story because other people are also indifferent to the plight of the people. Bolano is able to create Urrutia as a pessimistic embodiment of the moral apathy of the writers during the regime of Pinochet. The kind of true responsibility is lacking in Urrutia because response-ability according to Perls, is often a misused word that refers to â€Å"the ability to respond: the ability to be alive, to feel, to be sensitive. † (GTV, 100). It does not mean â€Å"obligation. † It does not mean â€Å"duty. † It is actually a trait that directs a person to do a task without asking why. One does it automatically and because he has been committed to doing that no matter what happens. Discretion is a trait that characterizes the career of Urrutia and his views become distorted as guilt overwhelms him. Comparison The film left a big impression on me and my friends. The people I watched the film with were very sad as the movie progressed, and even as it ended. It brought about important conversations which we had previously not considered about the past of the United States, and how life actually looked like under segregation and in its aftermath. It was clear from. We were all in agreement that the film had played an important educational role. We had taught more about American history in a vivid yet entertaining way than we had ever hoped to. The characters in the story were experts in bringing out the various themes. It was very enjoyable. We disagreed on other aspects of the movie. I was of the opinion, after watching the movie, that in the circumstances that Anderson and Ward performed their work, it was necessary to use some other means frowned upon in law to get things done.
